The way you treat your specimen in the field and prior
to taxidermy can have a large impact on the finished
product.  Here are some field care tips.

Wild game
  • Be sure to cape well behind the shoulder
  • Avoid cutting any hairs
  • Never slit a throat
  • Cut hide in a circle around mid-section
  • Cut circle around front legs one inch above the knees
  • Slit hide up the backside of each leg, follow hair line
  • Roll hide up the neck to base of scull like a sock
  • Cut the head off, be careful not to cut the hide
  • Keep cool, clean and dry
  • Get to taxidermist within 3 days or freeze

Fish
  • Do not gut or cut the fish
  • Wrap in plastic or wet towel
  • Place wrapped fish in plastic bag
  • Freeze solid

Birds
  • Handle birds gently
  • Do not cut or gut
  • Never wring a birds neck
  • Keep blood from plumage
  • Plug mouth with tissue
  • Place in a nylon stocking, head first
  • Keep tail feathers straight and place in a plastic bag
  • Get to freezer as soon as possible
